Hillside students demonstrate mastery of the map in National Geography Bee
to Hillside 5th grade student Jackson Beekman, who joined two Niskayuna
middle school students in advancing to the next stage of the National
Geographic Bee after winning a competition at the school on Friday, Jan. 20.
Eighteen Hillside students competed in the event, held in the school's
library. The 2nd place winner was Rebecca Schmidt, also a fifth grader. She
and Jackson are pictured here.
Thousands of schools hold the competitions each year as part of the National
Geographic Bee. It tests students' knowledge of countries and continents,
rivers, regions and other major geographic features. Niskayuna's middle
school students competed earlier this month.
The Hillside Geography Bee was organized by Library Media Specialist Deborah
Ubriaco and K-12 Director of Social Studies Marie Digirolamo.
School winners advance to take a test. The top 100 scorers in each state and
territory on the test are eligible to compete in their state Bee on March
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip for
state winners to participate in the national Bee in May. The winner of that
will receive a $50,000 scholarship, a lifetime National Geographic Society
membership, and a trip to the Galápagos Islands.
Good luck to Jackson as he continues on and congratulations to all of this
