From presidential politics and student loans to terrorism and campaign finance, Niskayuna High School students studying government and economics had the opportunity to discuss the major issues of the day with U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko for nearly 90 minutes on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

The visit was to the integrated AP Macroeconomics and AP Government and Politics classes of Robyn Salvin and John Sharkey. Rep. Tonko fielded questions from students for most of the visit. He thanked the administration, Social Studies teachers John Sharkey and Robyn Salvin and especially the students for a great visit and particularly insightful questions.

Rep. Tonko encouraged students to pursue studies and careers in an area they are passionate about. And although some of the conversation focused on challenges and problems that government faces, he encouraged them to avoid cynicism as their generation grows up and becomes leaders in society.

"It may not be perfect, but it's the best system in the world," he said. "If there's anything I could share with you today in terms of a hopeful message, it's this. Please give the system a shot."
