At its meeting
on Tuesday, November 10, the Board of Education named
experienced school leader Joseph R. DiCaprio as the next
principal of Rosendale Elementary School.
DiCaprio has been a principal in the Schenectady City School District since 2008, and currently serves at Woodlawn Elementary School in that capacity.
He impressed three committees interviewing candidates for the Rosendale position as an energetic instructional leader with a passion for students and learning. The interview committees included: Rosendale teachers, staff, parents, and alumni; principals and K-12 director; and central office administrators and Board of Education representation.
The interview process also included a visit to Rosendale Elementary School to observe a lesson, followed by a conversation with district leaders.
"We are very excited to be filling this position with a proven leader who is enthusiastic about helping all students reach their potential and the teamwork that requires," said Niskayuna Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra, Jr. "Our school principals are important leaders in our community, and we believe that Joe will be an asset not just to Rosendale, but to our district and the leadership team."
Prior to becoming principal of Woodlawn, DiCaprio was principal of Schenectady's Pleasant Valley School for four years. Before that, he was an instructional coach and teacher. His experience includes leading professional development initiatives and the use of data to shape instruction at the school and district level.
DiCaprio is expected to officially begin in the position on Monday, December 14. As that date nears, he will be reaching out to the Rosendale community about opportunities to get to know him. In fact, he is already familiar with the Rosendale community as a parent with two children in the school, along with another who attends Iroquois.
"I enter this position with incredible admiration for the record of academic success and the sense of community that have been nurtured at Rosendale by generations of teachers, parents, principals, and students," DiCaprio said. "I am thrilled and honored by the opportunity to become part of this fine tradition and continue this record of achievement as principal. I plan to work with everyone to ensure that Rosendale remains a place where students love to come and parents know their children will be supported and cared for as they learn and grow."
