Niskayuna voters approve 2016-17 school budget

Bus purchase and capital reserve propositions approved

Niskayuna Central School District voters on Tuesday approved the 2016-17 school budget, with 1,503 casting votes in favor of the $80.4 million spending plan and 413 opposed

Voters also approved the bus purchase proposition by a vote of 1,451 to 453 and approved the establishment of a capital reserve fund with 1,533 voting in favor and 363 opposed.

Patricia Lanotte was re-elected to the Board for a second term and John P. "Jack� Calareso and Nicki Foley were elected to first terms.

The results, announced at Niskayuna High School shortly after polls closed, showed 78 percent of 1,916 total voters supported the budget.

The budget calls for a spending increase of 3.02 percent and a tax levy increase of 0.41 percent. It continues all current programs and services and included targeted budget additions and restorations designed to meet student needs and strengthen student support.

"I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote today,� Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra, Jr. said. "Community support has been an essential component of the district’s success over many years. We don’t take it for granted and we won’t stop working to earn it. I believe that as a district we are on the right track and positioned to keep making progress, and we are grateful for today’s vote of confidence.�

 

Board of Education results

There were three candidates for the three seats on the Board of Education on this year’s ballot. The new Board terms will begin on July 1 of this year and go through June 30, 2019. Vote totals are as follows:

Patricia Lanotte - 1,486

Nicki Foley – 1,460

John P. "Jack� Calareso – 1,393
