The voices of more than 500 Niskayuna choral students filled
Proctors Theatre on Wednesday, March 9, during the annual
District Choral Festival that brings the choral programs of the
middle and high school together for one large concert.
The festival was the culminating event for guest conductor Dr. Daniel Gordon who worked with each of the performing groups for three days before the show as an artist in residence in the district. Gordon is a professor of choral music education at Southeastern University.
Backstage before the show, Dr. Gordon stood in front of the middle school choir making broad gestures to remind them to smile. “I don’t usually have the opportunity to work with all choirs like I did here,” Dr. Gordon said. “This was a great experience.”
Niskayuna Director of Music Chad Shippee acknowledged Dr. Gordon for taking the time to connect with the students and share his expertise with the staff.
Shippee also recognized the Friends of Music, which sponsored the event. “The Friends of Music continues to support enrichment opportunities for musicians beyond what is available through the schools,” Shippee said. He noted that the festival would not have been possible without the sponsorship of the group.
