Craig team builds their way to third place finish at Odyssey of the
Mind Tournament

Seven Craig Elementary School second and third graders placed third in the Odyssey of the Mind Region 7 Tournament on March 5 at Shenendehowa High School East. The team included second graders Niyanth Kanakasabapathy, Lucy Kvam and Claire Orzel, and third graders Reeya Dhinesh, Lincoln Merrill, Siddharth Sundaram and Cora Wareh.

Odyssey of the Mind is an educational program that encourages creative problem-solving. Teams of students compete to create the best solutions when presented with challenges.

The challenge the Craig team chose to solve was titled "Attack the Stack," a problem that challenged teams to build a structure out of the lightweight wood that could hold as much weight as possible. The creation had to be at least eight inches high and weigh no more than 15 grams.

To test their structure, the team played the role of scientists working in a Star Wars' inspired droid lab. The goal of the Craig scientists was to create a strong droid (balsa wood structure) that could withstand an attack  (stacking weights on the structure) by Darth Vader. The team’s structure was able to hold 55 pounds before being crushed by weights.

The team had guidance from two fifth grade student coaches, Greta Merrill and Faiz Wareh, and three parent coaches, Lauren Kvam, Chad Orzel and Sudharsana Srinivasan.
