Niskayuna students make thousands of handmade crafts for area nonprofits during Charity Week

Charity Week

Student organizers of the second annual Charity Week at Niskayuna High School estimate that more than 5,000 handcrafted items will be donated to five area charities by the end of the week.

During the week-long effort, approximately 1,400 students met in 81 homerooms throughout the school for 15 minutes each morning, creating handmade crafts for a different nonprofit organization each day.

High School Charity Week picCharity Week was an idea initiated by the high school SCOPE (Student Collaboration of Purposeful Enrichment) Club last year. The club founder, senior Rose Parisi, saw an opportunity for students to work together and make use of their homeroom time.

"I saw time in a day where we could help other people or do something nice or work on something as a school to give back and create meaningful mementos, Parisi said.

This year, the club worked with a series of other student groups including Key Club, Niskayuna Inter-Community Service, the Academic Resource Center, the National Honor Society, Pep Club, and Raise and Give to organize the event. The five crafts created this week included bookmarks for St. Catherine’s Center for Children, coloring kits for Albany Medical Center’s Pediatric Patients, cat toys for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, heart strings (see image below) to support the Pathways Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Niskayuna and key chains for Ellis Residential & Rehabilitation Center.
