Honors include "best design and construction of a bridge" and "best futuristic personal transportation system"

Middle School students received accolades for their vision of a redesigned Niskayuna 100 years from now at the regional Future City competition at Proctor's on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The seven-member team finished third overall, which earned them an invitation to present their city, Yunavair, at Engineers Week 2016 at the Albany Marriott on February 25.

In addition, they were recognized with awards for "best design and construction of a bridge," "best futuristic personal transportation system" and "outstanding participant," earning them monetary prizes, trophies and certificates.

The competition challenges students to design a "city of the future" based on a set of criteria. Students build and present a city model outlining their ideas during the competition.

The team members, from both Iroquois and Van Antwerp, are: Ian Vernooy, Sarah Vernooy, Jacob Yanoff, Bhanusree Chelli, Rohan Menon, Cyrus Irani and Dennis Plotnikov.

The team is coached by technology teacher Mike Petrone. This is the second year that Niskayuna middle school students participated in the competition.

"I could not be more proud of the students and how they represented themselves and Niskayuna," Petrone said.
