The leadership of Niskayuna Rowing and Mike Gilbert met today and agreed
to issue the following joint statement:
Today, Niskayuna Rowing and Mike Gilbert have mutually agreed that a separation is best for all. Coach Gilbert has provided four years of service and steadfast commitment to Niskayuna Rowing, and his important contributions to the program are appreciated.
Niskayuna Rowing President Richard Marine apologized for a series of communications and procedural breakdowns that led to confusion and misunderstanding regarding this matter. There was never any intent to cause harm to Coach Gilbert and his reputation, and it is unfortunate if that occurred as the result of how this was handled. Additionally, all parties regret how the athletes and their families learned about this situation.
The leadership of Niskayuna Rowing is committed to strengthening its procedures and policies to provide more clarity in how its handles coaching decisions and to avoid unnecessary impacts on individuals in the future.
To all of our Niskayuna rowers and their families, please know how deeply we all care about you and the future of your program. In fact, at this time we should be celebrating one of our most successful seasons in 30 years, including a national championship boat.
Coach Gilbert has been an essential element of this success, and we honor the energy and commitment that he provided to bring us to this point. He leaves a legacy of hard work, determination, competing at the highest levels – and winning. He made his mark on this program.
We look forward to many more years of success as we move into the future. As we do so, please know that we are focused on our rowers and our broader mission of providing them opportunities to compete, learn, and grow on the water. Thank you.
