Congratulations to the Van Antwerp SeaPearch, who had a very strong showing in their first appearance of the regional underwater robotics competition held at Ballston Spa this week. One of the Van Antwerp teams came in second in the rings challenge out of 19 teams, and another came in fourth out of 19 teams in the obstacle course, missing the top 3 by mere seconds. The students have been working alongside mentors from Knolls Atomic Power Lab and VA math, science, and technology teachers. They designed, constructed, and tested robots to perform various tasks in the underwater competitions, after receiving initial instruction on submersible vehicles.

The SeaPerch competition is sponsored by KAPL. Van Antwerp's participation is also made possible by KAPL, along with the dedication of teachers Tom Blechinger, Karen Postlethwait, Christine Tylock, and Michael Petrone. The teachers lost - just barely - to Ballston Spa in the teacher event that was part of the competition.

"We have a lot to be proud of," Christine Tylock said. "Our kids were fantastic, as were the competitors from all of the schools. The students showed that they had a true interest in this opportunity and really wanted to be part of it."

Here are the Van Antwerp students who formed the teams that were near the top in their event:

Team #5: Northern McCullough, Justin Camelo and Quinton Cain placed 2nd out of 19 teams in the Deepwater Retrieval event.

Team #1: Evan Wagle, Chris Davenport and Aiden Zelakiewicz placed 4th out of 19 on the obstacle course with a time of 1 min. 37 seconds.
