As a state budget nears, the time is right to advocate for your schools

With less than a week to go until the deadline for New York State lawmakers to approve a budget, it is an important time to let your elected representatives know about your priorities.

If you visit the advocacy page on our school district website, you will find resources to help you advocate for your schools, including a letter that I sent to our state representatives and more information about school budget issues. Contact information for your representatives is at the bottom of this page.

Earlier this month, the Niskayuna Central School District Board of Education approved a resolution calling on state leaders to end the Gap Elimination Adjustment, or GEA. The GEA is the state's ongoing policy of withholding aid from every district in New York to help address its own budget challenges.

Since the GEA was instituted in 2010-11, Niskayuna's schools have lost more than $11.9 million to it. Under the state budget proposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo in January, the district would lose another $2.9 million to the GEA next year.

There is no better investment than a Niskayuna education. The best way to ensure the stability of programs that students and families can count on, in a manner that our community can afford to support, is for the state to live up to its funding commitments.

While the separate budget plans of the state Assembly and Senate include some funding that would reduce the GEA, school leaders across the state believe that neither plan does enough. Four years into the state policy of the GEA, schools have fewer options to replace lost aid.

Whether you are a taxpayer, a parent, or both, this issue impacts you and your community. Please consider making your voice heard.
