Van Antwerp Student council Teams up with smashburger for fundraiser

On Thursday, Feb. 11, the Van Antwerp Student Council held it's first SmashBurger fundraising event. On the second Thursday of each month VA families are invited to eat at the Niskayuna SmashBurger, where one dollar per entree or kids meal will be donated ​to the VA Student Council when a SmashBurger card is presented. Cards are available at the middle school. The next fundraiser will be March 10. See photo from event

 

Best buddies friendship ball brings students together from all over capital region

Van Antwerp students participating in the Best Buddies Program attended the annual Best Buddies Friendship Ball on Feb. 5, 2016 at the Holiday Inn in Latham. Over 500 students from various schools in the Capital Region attended the event enjoying an evening of inclusion and dancing.  see photo from event

Van Antwerp students read to honor former teacher and celebrate community

More than 150 Van Antwerp Middle School and Niskayuna High School students attended a read-a-thon Jan. 22 to commemorate the life of former VA social studies teacher Susan Burke, who passed away seven years ago.
During the read-a-thon, students raised $1,000 for three local causes. read more

Niskayuna middle school students compete to become master of the map

In January, Niskayuna middle school students competed in school-wide National Geographic School Bees.
Students in grades 6-8 at Iroquois and Van Antwerp competed for school titles. The competition began in individual classrooms, then finalists moved on to school-wide contests where they were tested in a series of challenging geography questions prepared by the National Geographic Society. read more

 

VA students take steps toward extinguishing intolerance in their community

The Van Antwerp Study Circles Group participated in the Annual STOP (Students Together Opposing Prejudice) conference at Siena College, Friday, Jan. 15. The event brought together more than 200 students from 20 Middle Schools and High Schools in the Capital Region. read more

 

Middle school Future City team soars at regional competition

Middle School students received accolades for their vision of a redesigned Niskayuna 100 years from now at the regional Future City competition at Proctor's on Jan. 9. The team won third place overall and and received awards for "best design and construction of a bridge," "best futuristic personal transportation system. READ MORE

Before- and after-school programs begin at Van Antwerp

On January 4, TSL Adventures began before- and after-school programs at Niskayuna's middle schools. Families can now enroll children in these programs, which are open from 7 to 8:45 in the morning and from afternoon dismissal through 6 p.m. For more information and registration details, please click here.

 

Girls Summit encourages seventh graders to grow in STEM fields

Seventh-grade girls from Iroquois and Van Antwerp Middle Schools participated in the Girls STEM Summit at the HVCC TEC-SMART Campus in Malta on Dec. 16. Each of the girls were able to choose three workshops to attend throughout the summit. Read more

 

sixth graders make toys to spread holiday cheer

A group of sixth grade students at Van Antwerp Middle School spent two weeks in the woodworking technology lab creating, finishing and packaging wooden tic-tac-toe games that they then donated to Toys-for-Tots and Adopt-a-Family. Mr. Blechinger, Mr. Petrone and Mrs. Krauss helped the students through the process. View pictures

Van Antwerp students show their Heart and Sole at 5K run

After 10 weeks of training, six students from Van Antwerp Middle School will participate in the inaugural Girls on the Run Capital Region 5K celebration, 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch in Albany. [read more]

Each quarter, teachers nominate a handful of students in each grade level as "Super Students". This recognition can be based on scholarship, effort, improvement, citizenship, service or any other positive contribution to our school community. See Super Students here.

 

vA chorus impresses with 'students first' performance for school Board

About 120 of the 189 members of the Van Antwerp Chorus, led by teacher Jacob Purington, impressed Board of Education members and assembled guests prior to the November 10 Board meeting. Students performed "Count on Me" and talked with Board members about their favorite part of being in the chorus.

Van Antwerp held its 3rd annual Turkey Trot on Friday, November 6, with more than 100 students competing - and just as many supporters lining Dexter Street, including friends, teachers, parents, and even a few four-legged friends. Van Antwerp Community Day focuses on building strong school community

On Friday, Oct. 9, Van Antwerp Middle School students participated in the school’s annual Community Day. Students had the opportunity to choose from various workshops led by teachers, staff and community members, including mural painting, cooking, yoga, fishing, photography and playing guitar. The PTO family ice cream social is 6:00-8:00 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 16 in the V.A. cafeteria. Ice cream and toppings are free but that’s not the only reason to stop by; families are invited to come browse the book sale, which will be set up along-side the frozen treat. VA's Team Aquatix rises to the challenge at SeaPerch underwater robotics nationals

The Aquatix Sea Perch Team from Van Antwerp Middle School recently competed in the National SeaPerch Challenge at UMass Dartmouth. Out of 72 middle school teams, Aquatix came in 17th in the obstacle course, 19th in the finesse course, and recorded a personal best time along the way. READ MORE

Va Student Council dance a big hit!

On Friday, April 27, over 100 Van Antwerp students in grades 6-8 enjoyed our annual Spring Fling/Student Council Dance.  This year's dance was held at Niskayuna High School. The dance was planned entirely by our Van Antwerp student council representatives and advisors! It included decorations, DJ music and food/refreshments.  Thanks again to our Student Council and entire school community for a great event! More

 

April 28 N-CAP special event: "There and back, an evening with ken bartolo"

Parents, middle and high school students, coaches, and community members are invited to attend this special program, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Niskayuna High School auditorium. It will feature former professional lacrosse player Ken Bartolo sharing his incredible story of substance abuse and recovery and as well as information about how diet can enhance performance. April 30 miSci Teen Science Cafe: Spaceflight and the human body

All teens are welcome at a Teen Science Cafe to be held at Schenectady's Museum of Science and Innovation, miSci, on Thursday, April 30, featuring special guests from NASA. VA Science Bowl TEAM Earns trip to DC for nationwide competition

Congratulations to the Van Antwerp Middle School Science Bowl Team and their coach, Karen Postlethwait. The team members are Evan Schnell, Arelson Rapisura, Aditya Kanakasabapathy, Tatiana Malcevic and Rasy Bollapragada. They won the Regional Science Bowl competition at GE Global Research on Saturday, March 7. This qualifies them to travel to Washington D.C. this spring to compete at Nationals. Looking ahead...District planning a four-week summer enrichment program, July 6-31

Despite the frigid air and banks of snow, the district knows that many parents are already making summer plans for their children. We are pleased to let parents know that we are again planning to offer a Summer Enrichment Program, with opportunities for students K-12. Courses will be offered over four, one-week sessions. Van Antwerp Read-A-Thon an Outstanding Night of Community Service

The Annual VA Read-a-Thon, held Friday evening January 16, turned out to be way more than only reading. Coordinated by the sixth grade team, the event attracted more than 160 students, including approximately 25 high school role model students who shared their love of reading. High School scheduling update for parents of current 8th-11th grade students

In December, faculty members submitted course recommendations for students for 2015-16; those recommendations can now be viewed on the Parent Portal. Our guidance staff will be meeting with students through February to determine student course requests. VA Students Participate in 7th Annual Girls' Summit

In December, 20 Van Antwerp MS students attended the 7th Annual Girls' Summit sponsored by Girl's Inc and Time Warner Cable. The Summit was aimed at informing, inspiring and empowering young ladies to get involved in STEM activities and careers. Participants had an opportunity to work with students from Ballston Spa to team-build, problem-solve and learn more about high tech opportunities and careers. View Photos

The group of teachers at Van Antwerp Middle school who participated in "No Shave November" helped raise $200 in donations from adults in the school community. A sincere thank you to Mr. McFerran, Ms. Hughes and our 8th grade W.E.B (Where Everyone Belongs) leaders for their work in getting our sixth grade students comfortable during their first weeks of middle school. W.E.B leaders have helped to run our summer orientation, made welcome calls to incoming sixth graders, helped to facilitate the Back-To-School Dance and volunteered to guide families to homeroom on Back-To-School Nights. Thanks for your work and continued service to our school!

VA Drama Club impresses in "The girl with the golden locks"

This adapted fairy tale told the story of a group of agents (including Goldie Locks) infiltrating a crime ring led by the three bears. VA team wins regional science bowl, heads to nationals

VA science bowl teamCongratulations to the VA science bowl team for recently winning the Regional Science Bowl. They faced an equally talented Iroquois team in the finals, but were able to come from behind in the last few minutes to secure the win. They went undefeated all day against some very tough competition and will head to Nationals in Washington D.C. April 24-28. Good luck!

Colin Ross Wins VA Geography Bee

small photo of Colin RossColin Ross won the 2014 Geography Bee held annually at Van Antwerp MS, edging out a field of 10 participants. The competition consists of several rounds of very challenging geography questions that students attempt to answer on the spot. He will now take an exam to attempt to qualify for state competition. Congratulations and Good Luck Colin!

Kamryn Almas Qualifies for Regional Spelling Bee 

Kamryn Almas qualifies for regional spelling beeCongratulations to Kamryn Almas for qualifying to represent Van Antwerp at the Capital Region Spelling Bee on Feb. 11, at Proctors Theatre. The event will be recorded and televised. She joins Caroline Yao and Arielle Behar from Iroquois as Niskayuna's participants. Heather Callagan and Michael Pletman, English teachers, coordinated the school level spelling bees at the end of November where students across grades 6-8 competed for the three spots at the Regional Bee. We wish them all the best in the upcoming competition!
